Proof of Vaccination now required to visit Port Hawkesbury Public Library

The Strait Regional Centre for Education (SRCE) is directly responsible for the safety of its students and staff. As per provincial mandate, they require that all entrants into their facilities provide proof of full vaccination (PoV) upon entering a school. Learn more about Mandatory Vaccination in High-risk Settings here.

This means that effective immediately, proof of vaccination is required to visit the Port Hawkesbury Public Library, which is located inside Strait Area Education Recreation Centre (SAERC).

Library users who can not or choose not to provide proof of vaccination can access library services online and use our Borrow by Mail service.

Introducing: Eastern Counties Regional Library's New Logo

For over 50 years, Eastern Counties Regional Library has been providing public library service to the geographic areas of Guysborough, Inverness, and Richmond Counties. As we look toward the next 50 years, we are excited to introduce our new logo that symbolizes vibrancy, connection, and sharing. Stay tuned for our new and improved website, coming in December 2021.

Phase 5 Service Announcement – October 1, 2021

On Monday, October 4th, Eastern Counties Regional Library’s service locations will move into Phase 5 as part of the provincial reopening plan.

Eastern Counties Regional Library (ECRL) remains committed to providing safe access to library service for the public and providing a safe and healthy workplace for employees. As we have throughout the pandemic, ECRL will be following public health direction and aligning work practices and operations with the level of risk as described by Public Health.

In Phase 5, the following will be in effect:

  • At this time, masks continue to be mandatory in all indoor public places, including libraries.
  • Proof of vaccination will not be required for general access to libraries to do things such as borrow books and use computers.
  • Proof of vaccination will need to be shown for those 12 and older to participate in library programs or use library meeting rooms.
  • Hand sanitizer will continue to be provided in all library locations.
  • Do not enter the library if you are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 or if you are required to self-isolate for any reason.
  • Social distancing will no longer be required.
  • The capacity of library spaces will take into account informal gathering limits and occupant load standards and will be posted publicly in each library location.
  • Library staff will clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces at least once during their shift, including door handles, table tops, light switches, and toilets.

ECRL recognizes that staff and members of the public may prefer to keep a safe distance from other library users.

  • When replacing furniture and/or public access computers, care will be taken to continue offering seating options that allow comfortable distance to be maintained from other library users.
  • Contactless checkout (with Bluetooth operated barcode scanner and receipt printer) will be left in place and this will continue to be the default checkout method.

Indoor programming may resume, subject to library staff availability. Where available, public booking of meeting rooms may resume. Parties booking meeting rooms must agree to conditions of use and must not exceed meeting room capacity.

Public access to the library in Mabou remains unavailable due to a facility issue, but Curbside Pickup service remains available. Curbside Pickup service is also available in Mulgrave.

All library locations will continue to offer a Curbside Pickup or Library Takeout service. Borrow by Mail and digital library services continue to be available to everyone in the ECRL service area.

Proof of Vaccination Update - September 23, 2021

The Province of Nova Scotia has designated public libraries as essential services.

This means that when the Proof of Full Vaccination Policy comes into effect on October 4th, proof of vaccination will NOT be required to enter our libraries.

All Nova Scotia Health measures and protocols will apply. The library will continue to adjust our services in accordance with public health measures.

You will still need Proof of Vaccination to participate in many other activities that bring people together starting October 4th. You can print yours at the library free of charge.

We sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding during these challenging times.

Public Access Resuming at Port Hawkesbury Library on September 14

Eastern Counties Regional Library (ECRL) is pleased to begin welcoming students, teachers, and members of the public back into the Port Hawkesbury Library (located inside SAERC) beginning September 14, 2021.

The Nova Scotia government’s Returning to Class for 2021-22 plan outlines that schools will return to their existing policies on community use of schools. This includes permitting members of the public to enter SAERC and Dalbrae Academy to visit their public libraries. Due to a facility issue, the date to resume access at the Alexander Doyle Public Library, located inside Dalbrae Academy, will be announced at a later date.

Library users will need to follow public health guidance in the school and in the library. This will include COVID-19 screening and visitor sign-in for contact tracing purposes. Masks will be required at all times while inside the school until September 20, and are strongly recommended after that date. Any changes to masking requirements or other public health guidance will be communicated to library users if or when they take effect.

Users of Port Hawkesbury Library can continue to enjoy Borrow by Mail and ECRL’s extensive selection of digital content, and they will also have the opportunity to enjoy our great in-person services like browsing, public computer use, and free WiFi access. Curbside Pickup library service in Port Hawkesbury will be replaced with Library Take-out service. Library members can continue to place holds on their online account or with telephone assistance from library staff. They can arrange Library Take-out service with library staff, and their library items will be ready for pick-up just inside the library, in a manner similar to Curbside Pickup but inside the library instead of outside the building. Returns will be accepted inside the library and also in the bookdrop located inside the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre.

“We want to thank users of the Port Hawkesbury Library for their patience over these last 18 months,” said Laura Emery, CEO of ECRL. “We are proud of how staff were able to continue delivering library materials and library services to community members despite the challenges, and we are all very excited, and relieved, to be able to welcome visitors to the Port Hawkesbury Library again. “

As public health protocols can evolve quickly, please stay up to date on services offered at ECRL by visiting often, or by following ECRL on social media:|
