Visiting Children's Author K.V. Johansen
Canso staff members Sanda Dixon (left) and Janet Delorey (far right) welcomed children's author K V Johansen to the Canso Library for a short visit following a reading held at the Fanning Education Centre in early May. Ms. Johansen was in the area prior to attending the Hackmatack Children's Choice Book Awards for which she was nominated.
Children's author K V Johansen, centre, visited Eastern Counties Regional Library in early May thanks to funding by the Canada Council for the Arts and local sponsor, Maritime Inn Port Hawkesbury. While in the region, she presented readings at selected elementary schools with the Strait Regional School Board. Libraries Offer Walking Kits in Partnership with Heart and Stroke Foundation
All 16 branches and link sites of Eastern Counties Regional Library have received Heart and Stroke Walkabout kits to help library users get walking. The regional library is part of a provincial health initiative to make pedometers and walking programs more accessible to the public.

Counties Regional Library , checks out the Walkabout pedometer before she sets out on her noon fitness walk. Trish is one of several staff members based at ECRL Headquarters in Mulgrave who walk at lunch hour on a daily basis. The pedometers will allow them to count the steps accumulated during the walks and use the logbooks to record their progress.

Retiring ECRL Board members Honoured
On Friday, March 13, 2009, a celebration was held at Eastern Counties Regional Library (ECRL) headquarters in Mulgrave to honor and acknowledge four ECRL Board members who recently retired from their positions on the Board. Board Chair Shirley McNamara made a special presentation thanking these individuals for the time and energy they brought to the cause of public libraries in general, and the workings of the Eastern Counties Regional Library Board in particular. Those honored included former Chair of the Library Board, Mr. Joe Walsh from Canso, former Treasurer Mr. Art Carter from Mulgrave, former Vice-Chair Mr.Ned MacDonald from Inverness and Mr. Clair Rankin from St. Peter's. Also on hand for the presentation were Board member Susan Mallette, Marney Simmons, Mayor of Mulgrave, Petra Mauerhoff,Chief Librarian/CEO and members of library headquarters staff.

Read to Me! Jamboree 2009
Melissa Cook, Mulgrave, poses with her baby Victoria and son Elliott at the Read to Me! Jamboree held at the Mulgrave Library on Monday, January 26, 2009. The Jamborees were held at library locations throughout Nova Scotia to celebrate Family Literacy Day.
The Canso Library hosted a Read to Me! Jamboree, a celebration of books and babies, on Monday, January 26. The celebration is an annual event across Nova Scotia. Cayden Rhynold was the winner of the book prize package that day, arranged through the Nova Scotia Family Literacy Read to Me! Program.
 

Family Literacy Day World Record - "Most Children Reading with an Adult, Multiple Locations."
In Canso, nineteen children and their parents and/or caregivers were on hand to hear the five pre-selected Robert Munsch books read by special guest, retired school teacher Donna Lewis. Over 190,500 participants across Canada were registered for the attempt to break the world record.
The Drs. Coady & Tompkins Library in Margaree Forks hosted a Family Literacy Day World Record Attempt on Saturday, January 24, 2009. Over 30 children and their families listened to special guests read from selected Robert Munsch books for thirty minutes. Results are being forwarded on to ABC-Canada Literacy Foundation who will in turn contact the Guinness World Record ™ office to see if Canadians were able to upset the record currently held by the US.
The Mulgrave Library hosted a Family Literacy Day World Record Attempt on Saturday, January 24, 2009. Fourteen children and their parents or caregivers listened while special guest reader, Marney Simmons, Mayor of Mulgrave, read five Robert Munsch books for thirty minutes. Following the readings, a draw was held for a Guinness World Record 2009 book. Mayor Simmons presented the book to the winner, John Parks, age 6, of Mulgrave.
Deanna Henry, grade 4 teacher at the Chedabucto Education Centre, reads to children at the Cyril Ward Memorial Library in Guysborough in an attempt to break a world record. The library joined with libraries and communities across the country on Saturday, January 24 to break the record currently held by the US. Thirteen children and their families braved the winter weather to listen to Mrs. Henry as she read from selected Robert Munsch books.

New Shelving for Cheticamp Link Site

Gisèle LeBlanc, Library Assistant for the Chéticamp Libr@ry Link site situated at École NDA School, is enjoying the new shelving units, recently donated by Principal of the school, Cyril Camus. The Libr@ry Link site operates one Wednesday a month from 3:00 - 7:30 pm. The new shelving will allow for a larger and more efficient display area for library users to enjoy as they browse the bilingual mobile collection.

Judique Link Site

Eastern Counties Regional Library staff visit Judique once a month to offer library services through a Libr@ry Link site at the Judique Community Centre from 4:30 - 7:30 pm. On the January 13, 2009 visit, Gloria MacLellan (left) and Kay Campbell were on hand to choose from the mobile collection which includes books in regular or large print,audio books, DVDs and a large assortment of children's materials.

Santa Comes to Canso Library

annual Christmas storytime held at the Canso Library on Saturday, December
20, 2008.  Also on hand was Canso Councillor Marjorie Rhynold (kneeling). Over
sixty children and their families attended the event which was cosponsored
by Eastern Counties Regional Library, the Town of Canso and the RCMP
Adopt-a-Library program.

 

Write a Letter to Santa, Christmas 2008

Mini-staff Day at Library Headquarters
Eastern Counties Regional Library recently hosted a mini-staff day at Library Headquarters in Mulgrave. On December 5, 2008, staff representing all the Branches in the region joined with Headquarters staff for a 1-day workshop. The morning session included updates from Chief Librarian Petra Mauerhoff and managers Mary Landry and Trish McCormick. Garfield Moffatt of MacLellan and Moffat Fincancial, was on hand in the afternoon providing information about the ECRL pension plan.

The EnCana Energy Collection for Families is on the Move!

 
This special collection for children and their families, comprised of books and materials on topics that foster an interest in science and technology including the oil and gas industry, will visit each Branch of Eastern Counties Regional Library for 3 weeks before moving onto the next location. The collection was purchased through a $4,000 donation by EnCana Corporation and started its tour at the Cyril Ward Memorial Library in Guysborough, moved to the Drs. Coady and Tompkins Memorial Library in Margaree Forks, and has recently taken up residence in the Port Hawkesbury Library.

Drop by the Port Hawkesbury Library to see the latest new books! The materials also have a special designation on the ECRL online catalogue at ecrl.library.ns.ca. Readers will be able to view the full list of materials by clicking on the EnCana Energy for Families Collection button. EnCana is a leading North American unconventional natural gas and integrated oil company.

New Board for ECRL, Fall 2008
 
Members of the Eastern Counties Regional Library Board recently met at Library Headquarters in Mulgrave for the first time since the Municipal elections held in the fall. The Board is comprised of councillors or community members representing the 7 municipalities served by ECRL and 2 provincial appointees. There are 4 new representatives joining the Board including Cllr.Elaine Durling, Town of Mulgrave; Cllr. Susan Mallette, Inverness County; Deputy Warden Gail Johnson, Municipality of Richmond County; and Mayor Frank Fraser, Town of Canso. Returning members include Shirley McNamara, Provincial Appointee, Cllr. Myles MacPherson, Municipality of the District of Guysborough; Cllr. James Harpell, District of St. Mary’s; Ally MacKenzie, community representative, Town of Port Hawkesbury; and Lester Wood, Provincial Appointee.

The December 5 meeting saw the election of a new executive that will be in place until the 2009 AGM to be held in June. Elected to the Executive are Chair Shirley McNamara, Vice-Chair Myles MacPherson, and Treasurer Elaine Durling.

2008 Share a Book Campaign Launch at Coady-Tompkins Library
The Drs. Coady and Tompkins Memorial Library in Margaree Forks was the location of the launch of Eastern Counties Regional Library's annual Share a Book Build a Community fundraising campaign on Saturday, October 18. On hand to present the library with an initial donation of $4,000 was Lori MacLean, EnCana's Community Relations Advisor (centre). ECRL Board member Lester Wood, left, and Chief Librarian Petra Mauerhoff, right, were on hand to accept the cheque. EnCana will also match all other donations to a maximum of $6,000. To make a donation, visit any library branch or Link site, or call library headquarters at 747-2597 to request a donor card.

A Book Launch was held in Petit de Grat with Hélène Boudreau, author of Acadian Star on Saturday, October 18, 2008. It was a great success, attracting 60 people to the library to meet and greet Hélène. Rumor has it around 80 books were sold!
 

 
Anne LeBlanc, centre, Library Assistant for the Drs. Coady and Tompkins Memorial Library in Margaree Forks, welcomed 53 participants from the Coady Institute on September 28, 2008. The Library was one of the stops during their annual tour of the Margaree area.
 

 
Mulgrave Summer Reading Program 2008
The TD Summer Reading Program was a huge success at the Mulgrave Library. The final activity created excitement as the children participated in some mummy wraps! Thanks to ECRL Summer Reading Program Coordinator Candace DeCoste who will be returning to studies in the Fall to pursue a Diploma in Library Technology.

Mulgrave Senior's Expo 2008
Eastern Counties Regional Library staff set up an information display at the Mulgrave Seniors Expo held on August 20 at the Mulgrave Fire Hall. The display included samples of large print books and magazines, audio books, DVDs, and information on Books by Mail, Householder services, and the online catalogue. ECRL Chief Librarian Petra Mauerhoff arranges materials on the display table.

 

 

Cassie Deveaux Cohoon Reading in Petit de Grat
Author Cassie Deveaux Cohoon captivated the audience at the Petit de Grat Library on Tuesday, August 12, 2008 reading excerpts from her recently released novel, Severine, the story of a modern day woman coming to terms with her Acadian roots. Book signings were held following the reading.

Cheticamp native Cassie Deveaux Cohoon was in Cheticamp on August 6 to read from her recently published novel, Severine at the Libr@ry Link site located in the NDA school. The audience of approximately 30 people was treated to several excerpts from the novel and an entertaining question and answer period provided in both French and English.

 
Summer Reading Program 2008 in Canso
Canso Library staff Sandra Dixon, left, and Janet Delorey "clowned" around recently at the TD Summer Reading Program "Laugh Out Loud Day" held on Friday, August 8th at the Canso Library. Skits were also presented by some of the children for the enjoyment of all. Youth presenters were Kasey and Brendon Dixon.
   

 

 
Book Donation to Nigerian School
Eastern Counties Regional Library recently made a large donation of used books to Reverend Anthony Chukwunta of St. Columba Parish in Lakevale. The books will be sent to Nigeria for use in a new school being built there. Reverand Chukwunta can be reached at 863-2811 for further information or to make a donation.
 

 
2008 Annual Book Sale
Another annual book sale has come and gone at ECRL library headquarters. On July 19, approximately 250 people were on hand to purchase hundreds of gently used and surplus books. All remaining books after the sale were donated to Reverand Anthony Chukwanta of St. Columba Parish in Lakevale for a new school being built in Nigeria.

 

   
 

 
Mulgrave Scotiadays Parade 2008
Mulgrave staff members Joyce Oliver-Snair, Tara O'Neill-Ryan, and Summer Program Coordinator Candace DeCoste participated in the Scotiadays Festival Parade on Saturday, July 19. The library van was decorated to promote this year's TD Summer Reading Program entitled "Laugh Out Loud" and staff walked or drove the route passing out frisbees and information. Donovan Jamieson of Mulgrave was also on hand to walk the parade route!

 

 

 
Sherbrooke Library's Seniors' Cafe
The Sherbrooke Library's Seniors' Café was a big hit on Friday, July 11, 2008 drawing a record number of participants for the weekly drop-in program. Anyone over the age of 55 is invited to the Library on Fridays from 9:30 - 10:30 for an hour of friendship, lively conversation on the topic of the hour, computer help, and a chance to browse the library's collection, when the doors are closed to the general public.
