Borrow By Mail Service for Residents of Inverness County

Effective Monday, March 16, all Eastern Counties Regional Library locations will be closed for three weeks as a precaution to help limit the spread of COVID-19. As part of this closure, Borrow By Mail service has also been suspended. Please see this notice to all Borrow By Mail users for more information.

Inverness County residents that live in a rural area not served by a branch, or are not able to use a nearby branch, are eligible to use our Borrow By Mail service. This service allows library users to request, receive, and return items via Canada Post.

Requesting Items

Users can request materials from our online catalogue or our online Interlibrary Loan Request Form by selecting the community closest to them out of the following list: Inverness, Judique, Whycocomagh, Cheticamp or St. Joseph du Moine.

Users that do not have access to the Internet or require assistance in placing requests are welcome to call one of our Inverness County libraries for assistance:

Library users who use the Borrow By Mail service can still borrow from any of our library branches, but any items borrowed in person need to be returned in person to one of our libraries or community return locations. You cannot use the postage-paid mail bags to return items borrowed in person.

Receiving Items

Library materials sent by mail will arrive in a black bag with a plastic window displaying the postage information (See Figure 1). If you receive more than one mail bag at a time, it is important that you note which items came from each bag as these items must be returned in the same bag.

ECRL items borrowed using the Borrow By Mail service have a borrowing period of four weeks. Please note that items sent from other regions through Interlibrary Loan requests may have a different borrowing period, so it is important to check the white slip attached to the front cover for the due date for each item received from another library system.

When you are ready to return your borrowed items, please remove the original postage slip from the plastic window, replace it with the enclosed return slip (see Figure 2) and bring the bag to your nearest Canada Post location or mailbox.

It is important that you use this postage return slip as it has already been billed to Eastern Counties Regional Library. It will not save the library any money if do not use it.

Please note that it is very important that items are returned in the bag in which they arrived for two reasons:

  • The postage has been paid according to the weight of the bag. Staff weigh the items before sending. The package must weigh the same weight upon return.
  • The mail bags sometimes have different destinations. Some returns go to Port Hood Library for processing, and others go to our Headquarters location in Mulgrave. It is important that each item is returned to the correct location.

Library mail bags will be checked out to your account (just like a book) and there will be an associated charge should they not be returned.
